This bibliographic study tries to understand how the human identity is in the dialogical game
between the unit and the diversity. The identity is a fundamental feature which distinguishes
one individual from another one, one group from other groups or one civilization from
another one. The man forms and shapes his identity from the moment he has contact with
the world and, mainly, with the human culture. The characteristics of each one, the way of
thinking, being and acting are developed with the practice of daily actions in the cultural
reality in which the man belongs. The human identity, according to the complexity theory
principles, can be included in the dialogical of unit and diversity as being two inherent,
antagonistic and additional dimensions of the human specie. The humanity identity, being
single and multiple, must complement the differences which characterize the peoples that
live in the same planet. The construction of a planetary identity assumes, on the other hand,
a school education which recognizes and respects the diversity and plurality of cultures. The
organization of the school system can have a perspective that includes and contemplates
the human identity issue. To do so, it is necessary to rethink the school function as source
and base of identity proposition in a planetary and plural world. It is the school education
job to awake an anthropological awareness and develop the identity construction of the
human being which is able to recognize the unit in the diversity, in a world that is considered
Earth-Homeland of everybody.

Neste texto apresentamos alguns conceitos sobre a identidade humana e
analisamos o papel determinante de cada cultura na cunhagem das características
identitárias de cada ser humano e de toda a humanidade.
Com base nas ideias de alguns pensadores, sobretudo Edgar Morin, ca-
racterizamos o percurso de algumas das principais identidades que a humanidade
assumiu ou pode assumir ao longo da História, dando ênfase à necessidade de
a humanidade constituir uma identidade planetária.
Ao final, destacamos a importância e a difícil tarefa da educação escolar,
hoje, em tempos de multiculturalismo, na formação e no desenvolvimento da
identidade individual e de toda humanidade.
